GMA suspends strike and calls on members to return to their posts

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has suspended its industrial action effective today, July 15.

According to GMA, this decision followed an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) with the unions of the organized trade unions.

In a press release dated July 15, signed by the Association’s President and General Secretary, Dr. (Med) Frank Serebour and Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, the Association said that the Organised Labour Union had received an official communication from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) that it had withdrawn its decision to divest 60% of the shares in four hotels to a private company owned by the Ghanaian Minister of Food and Agriculture.

As a result of this development, the GMA called on its members to call off the industrial action and return to their workplaces.

“Following an emergency meeting on 15 July 2024, the Organised Labour union decided to suspend industrial action with immediate effect after the SSNIT formally confirmed the completion of the sale of the 60% stake.”

“In light of this decision, NEC is suspending the previously published plan for industrial action with immediate effect and instructing all members to return to their posts,” the press release continued.

On July 12, the GMA launched actions to persuade its members to stop working in solidarity with its umbrella organization, the Workers’ Union. The strike then began in some health facilities todayMonday.

Organized Labor announced an end to the strike, gave the SSNIT one month to address its concerns.
