Woman demands Rs 12 crore compensation after ‘traumatic’ flight turbulence incident

A JetBlue passenger, Tahjana Lewis, has taken legal action against the airline after a “traumatic” incident happened to her on her flight from Orlando, Florida to Hartford, Connecticut. Lewis claims she suffered severe burns when hot tea was spilled on her during turbulence while the fasten seatbelt sign was lit. She considers this a dangerous situation when serving hot drinks. She claims the tea served to another passenger was excessively hot and dangerous and she suffered painful burns on her chest, legs, right arm and other parts of her body. Lewis is demanding $1.5 million (approximately Rs. 12 crore) in damages from the airline as a result of the incident.

According to the lawsuit, the passenger is suing the airline for “failing to follow proper protocols for preparing and serving hot beverages during in-flight service; negligently and carelessly serving hot beverages to passengers; failing to provide the plaintiff with reasonably safe travel conditions; and failing to provide her with adequate first aid following her injury,” Fox Business reports.

Meanwhile, Tahjana Lewis’ attorney Edward A. Jazlowiecki told USA Today: “They shouldn’t have done that. This is a serious matter for them. They didn’t do much for her. They went about it very arrogantly.” Lewis was reportedly on board the JetBlue flight with her five-year-old daughter and the incident was deeply traumatic for the young child.

Tahjana Lewis also suffers from mental anguish, anxiety and post-traumatic stress as a result of her injury. Her attorney also notes that she may also require a skin graft to treat her injuries, some of which “will be permanent in nature and/or permanently disabling.” The lawsuit also states that the burns have affected her ability to work and participate in her daily activities.

This is not the first time a business has gotten into legal trouble for spilling a hot drink on a customer. Last year, an 85-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s claiming she was given a coffee cup with a lid that wasn’t properly sealed. When she tried to drink the drink, the lid came off and her body suffered severe burns. According to the Washington Post, she suffered first and second degree burns in the incident while restaurant staff didn’t even bother to help her.
