Child molester from Redcar died in prison of asbestos cancer

Donald Moore, from Redcar, was jailed in 2006 after committing 53 offences, including sexually assaulting a man during a robbery. He had previously sexually abused children, women and men.

The court heard that Moore had committed a long list of sexual offences against men and women as early as 1958, when he was just 17 years old.

He died in July 2023 from disseminated malignant mesothelioma. A new report by the Prison Ombudsman has been released revealing further details about his death.

The dangerous paedophile was imprisoned at HMP Wymott near Leyland in Lancashire.

When former scaffolder Moore was admitted, he was given an indefinite sentence on public protection grounds, meaning that in order to secure his release, doctors had to prove he had lost his sex drive.

In 2005, a 15-year-old girl reported a series of sexual offenses against Moore, after which the father of four children pleaded guilty to a number of charges and was essentially sentenced to prison for the rest of his life.

An investigator for the Prisons and Probation Commissioner concluded during the investigation into his death that his care in prison had been “variable”.

The PPO wrote: “The clinical assessor concluded that the clinical care Mr Moore received at HMP Wymott was variable.”

“Some areas of Mr Moore’s care were consistent with what he would expect in the community.

“However, she found some areas where the healthcare team can learn, including limited monitoring of Mr Moore’s condition and compliance with NICE guidelines for assessing fall risk.”
