Check out photos from the Fire Ball ride breakup

The Fire Ball ride at the Ohio State Fair on July 28, 2016.

Tom Dodge, The Columbus Dispatch

A series of dozens of photos taken by a passerby as the Fire Ball ride collapsed at the Ohio State Fair in July 2017 shows the horrific and chaotic aftermath of the deadly incident. Police officers rush to the scene shortly after the ride failed. A series of more than 60 photos, many taken in rapid succession just seconds apart over a two-minute period, show would-be riders waiting in line and running for their lives after a gondola came loose, throwing four riders through the air and killing one man. They show horrified pedestrians, many of the children stunned by the carnage, and Ohio State Troopers responding seconds after the accident. They show the ride -- minus the broken four-person gondola -- coming to a stop with the remaining riders still trapped in their seats, but ride employees are either gone or standing there stunned by what they just witnessed. No one appears to be trying to help them exit the ride as the series of photos ends, about two minutes after the seemingly catastrophic failure of a steel arm. And, perhaps most importantly, they show some of the clearest shots of the large crack in the arm, almost exactly where the steel broke, from an angle that shows it extended laterally the entire length of the steel beam.
