Police arrest officer for alleged sexual assault of teenager

The Lagos State Police Command yesterday arrested a police officer, simply named Supol Owolabi, attached to the Ogudu Area Command, for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a teenage girl in his office.

Police Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade confirmed the arrest and said the senior police officer’s actions violated ethical standards and assured that justice would be done.

He said investigations have already begun to determine the officer’s guilt, adding that the officer involved in the sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl has been arrested.

“I have ordered a full and thorough investigation into the allegation. The public can be assured that this is absolutely not an attempted cover-up as such a heinous act is contrary to the code of conduct and professional ethics of the Nigerian Police Force.

“If the officer is found guilty, he will be punished according to police regulations and the law,” he said.
As the Guardian learned, the suspect heard the girl describe her ordeal at the hands of the robbers, which led to the loss of her phone.

The officer reportedly called the girl’s mother on June 29, informed her that her daughter’s lost phone had been recovered and the robbers had been arrested, and asked her to send her daughter to his office to pick up the phone.

When she arrived at the station, the unnamed teenager was told that the phone did not belong to her and that those arrested had nothing to do with the attack on her.

She was sent to Owolabi’s office to find out more details, where the officer is said to have locked the door, put the key in her pocket and started to roughly treat the girl.

When she resisted, the officer allegedly pulled out his service pistol and threatened to shoot her.

He finally got his way. It was learned that the officer also warned the girl not to tell anyone and to report to his office regularly.
