“We are in a downward spiral of moral decay that leads us to believe that violence is an option,” said Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. “Violence begets violence, and as children of the Most High God, the Prince of Peace, it is our responsibility to call for peace.”

After Saturday’s shooting, Rabbi Larry Sernovitz of the Hillels of Georgia said it’s necessary to focus on humanity.

“The fundamental principle of what Judaism and the true religion of the world really stands for is that every human being is created in the image of God and when we come back to that and we are able to look someone else in the eye and say I see you, I hear you, you are a human being,” Sernovitz said.

Each religious leader reminded his members of the text they quote week after week.

“Jesus died for all of us, even for people we disagree with, amen, that’s the mark of who we are as believers,” Bryant said.

“I may not agree with everything you say, I may not agree with you on anything, but at least I see your humanity and we’ve lost it,” Sernovitz said.

Rabbi Sernovitz and Pastor Bryant both warned against political debates degenerating into conflict or violence.
