This weekend, downtown Houston welcomes the return of the Columbian Festival, the World Series of Dog Shows comes to town, the SaberCats open the rugby playoffs, and a DJ Screw opening celebration takes over from George R. Brown.

The whole weekend

  • Texas New Music Festival at MATCH | Daily – Find your groove at this festival featuring the talents of more than 50 composers, choreographers and instrumentalists performing 28 world premieres. $20 and up. Times vary.
  • Houston World Series of Dog Shows at NRG Center | Daily – Be enchanted by 150 different breeds of man’s best friend, all competing for the title of “Best of Show,” plus competitive events like flyball, creative grooming, a frisbee exhibition and canine musical freestyle. $15; free for ages 12 and under. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Comedian Emil Wakim at Riot Comedy Club | Friday and Saturday – The Brooklyn-based comedian arrives for back-to-back nights at the upstairs mic at Rudyard’s, following appearances on Tonight’s show And Don’t tell a comedy. $20 and up. 7 p.m.
  • MFA Shop Exhibition: Isabel Wilson de Jardín at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Friday to Sunday | FREE – Isabel Wilson of Montrose boutique Jardín is welcomed for a three-day runway show at the MFAH boutique, showcasing the custom prints, artist collaborations and circular design practice Jardín is known for. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Cocomelon Party at the Westin Galleria Houston | Friday to Sunday – Join the fun at a unique party featuring songs, dances and games inspired by the popular children’s show. $39.50. Times vary.
  • Barnum & Bailey and Ringling Bros. at the NRG stadium | Friday to Sunday – The world’s circus spectacle comes to Houston with 75 performers representing more than 18 countries featuring tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, acrobats, dancers and more. $20 and up. Show times vary.
  • And then there was no more Agatha Christie left at the Alley Theater | Friday to Sunday – Ten strangers are trapped in a deadly game of survival on a remote island in this ongoing production filled with tension and drama. $31 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • The Gilbert & Sullivan Company of Houston presents Ruddigore at UH Cullen Performance Hall | Saturday and Sunday – This classic melodrama runs this weekend. It tells the story of a young girl torn between a handsome young man and a cad in this gothic comic opera. $49 and up. Saturday 7 p.m.; Sunday 2:30 p.m.

Thursday July 18, 2024

  • Poet The Band in concert at White Oak Music Hall – The pop metal band is touring with its new single “Weightless,” joined by Lights & Apparitions, NDGO and Mirror Lake. $18. 6 p.m.
  • Loriana Espinel: Dance of gestures at Sabine Street Studios – In the Arts District, Colombian artist Loriana Espinel shares her inspiration from the pre-Columbian pictograms of Chiribiquete National Park, designing a visual system based on the intersection of two different calligraphy styles. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Pier & Beam Happy Hour at Warren’s Inn | No Cover – Join Preservation Houston’s young professionals group for drinks at the downtown bar, where you can meet people who are passionate about the city’s history, neighborhoods, and architecture. 6pm-8pm.
  • Save The Locals Summer Concert: Dem Roots at Menard Park | FREE – The Galveston Summer Concert Series continues with Dem Roots taking the stage along Seawall Boulevard, alongside Oje Band and Youth Soul Love. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Night Bike Ride at Island Bicycle Company | FREE – Cruise along the seawall on brightly lit cruise ships on this summer evening stroll on Galveston Island, ending with drinks and dinner at Pier 21. 6:30 p.m.
  • Comedian Dauood Naimyar at Riot Comedy Club – From a first successful comedy (Quai 69: junior team), Naimyar brings a unique perspective to the Montrose Upstairs stage, sharing new material that draws on his experiences as an Afghan American and the world as he sees it. $15 and up. 7 p.m.
  • Salsa Night at the Post Houston | FREE – Dance salsa, bachata and other Latin styles when Love Dance HTX comes to give you free lessons, by reservation. 7 p.m.
  • Benise in concert at the Hobby Center – The Emmy-winning “Prince of Spanish Guitar” brings his world tour downtown, with an evening of Spanish flamenco, Cuban salsa, Brazilian samba, Parisian waltz and more. $46.25 and up. 7:30 p.m.
  • Aaron Lewis in concert at 713 Music Hall Staind’s founding member and lead singer arrives with songs from his new country album, The hill. $53.45 and up. 8 p.m.
  • Aaron Watson in concert at Rustic Downtown – Chart-topping country singer tours new album, Cover Girljoined by special guest Jenna Paulette. $25 and up. 8 p.m.
  • Concerts Under the Stars: Tribute to ABBA at the Marriott Marquis Houston – Enjoy a night atop the Texas-shaped rooftop pool, dancing and singing to the disco sounds of Abba. $45 and up. 8 p.m.
  • The Waxaholics and DJ Big Reeks at Neighbors | No coverage – Harrisburg’s East End Bar is hosting a party featuring the Waxaholics, DJ Big Reeks and guest DJs playing tracks from their hand-picked vinyl collections. From 8pm until late.

Friday July 19, 2024

  • Chicas Local Market at the Esplanade on Navigation | No coverage – Support local women-owned businesses at this Second Ward pop-up featuring vendors, live music, photo ops, complimentary beverages and a free gift for the first 50 guests. From 5pm to 10pm.
  • Frank Family Wines Dinners at Nice Winery – Taste five expertly paired small-production wines with a five-course dinner at Spring Branch Winery. $195. 6 p.m.
  • Bingo Jukebox at North Shepherd Brewery | FREE – Earn points on your bingo cards by listening to clips of popular songs at the North Heights Brewery. 6 p.m.
  • Lyric Market Food and Cocktail Tour – Get ready for an evening filled with gourmet delights, craft cocktails, live jazz and gastronomic fun in downtown. $76. 6pm-8pm.
  • Fever Opening Reception at the Silos at Sawyer Yards | FREE – Artist and organizer Aime Rosales joins the cohort of artists, creating an immersive installation titled SongbookBe among the first to discover this work that creates a dialogue between the culture of the past and that of the present. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Jxdn in concert at White Oak Music Hall – The rock singer-songwriter comes to Northside for an evening of songs from his latest album, When the music stops. $18.25 and up. 7 p.m.
  • Latina Night at the Home Run Dugout | FREE – The Shekere Latin Band takes over the Katy Canoe for an evening of Latin sounds, with the Texas Salsa Congress offering free salsa lessons until 8 p.m. to help you live in the moment. 7 p.m. to midnight.
  • Comedian TK Kirkland at the House of Blues – The comedian and podcast host heads downtown for an evening of live performances and the “jewel drops” he’s become known for. $48.75 and up. 7:30 p.m.
  • Liverpool Legends: The Complete Beatles Experience at the Stafford Centre – Come celebrate 60 years of The Beatles with an award-winning tribute band as they visit Fort Bend. $35 and up. 7:30 p.m.
  • Anthony Hamilton and the Isley Brothers in concert at the Smart Financial Centre The neo-soul crooner brings a blend of contemporary R&B to a co-headlining performance with soul and funk giants. $81 and up. 8 p.m.
  • Tate Mcrae in concert at 713 Music Hall – The Canadian singer-songwriter strolls downtown while supporting her sophomore album, Think later. $119 and up. 8 p.m.
  • Top Gun: Maverick Film screening at Trebly Park | FREE – The 2022 blockbuster film starring Tom Cruise will be screened outdoors in the downtown park at the corner of Leeland and Fannin streets. 8 p.m.
  • Ghost Party album released on Dan Electro’s – Come enjoy the cool vibes of this pop-punk band playing a live set in the Heights with opening acts Marley Moon and Young Mammals. $10. 8 p.m.
  • Bob Schneider in concert at Main Street Crossing – Former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, Schneider will showcase his talents for combining funk, country, rock and folk. $38. 8 p.m.
  • Sara Evans in concert at the Arena Theatre – Dive into the Unbroke Tour with this multiplatinum artist known for five No. 1 singles like “Suds in the Bucket” and “No Place That Far.” $19.75 and up. 8:30 p.m.
  • James Bolden in concert at the Big Easy Social & Pleasure Club – Near Rice Village, “Boogaloo” will showcase his talents honed over 30 years as bandleader of B.B. King’s Blues Band and a career storied in concerts with artists like Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Isaac Hayes and Houstonian Trudy Lynn. $10. 9 p.m.
  • DJ Set T78 at Stereo Live – Straight from Italy, the techno DJ and producer lands in West Houston for a live set. $14.99. 10 p.m.
