7 people homeless, 1 pet dead after house fire in Elk

The 4th Spokane County Fire District responded to a house fire in Elk on Sunday afternoon.

ELK, Washington – A house fire in Elk on Sunday, July 14, left seven people homeless and a pet dead.

According to Spokane County Fire District 4, fire crews responded to a house fire near East Valley Lane in Elk.

SCFD4 stated that the fire started in the basement of the house and caused severe damage there. The rest of the house also sustained severe smoke and heat damage.

At the time the fire broke out, there were seven people in the house, all of whom were safely evacuated.

Two of the three pets were also safely evacuated, but unfortunately one died in the fire.

SCFD4 reports that firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings or vegetation.

Since Sunday, 5 p.m., firefighters have been clearing away the remains of the fire and determining the cause of the fire.
