Uttar Pradesh: Police team controlling drunken wedding procession attacked, 11 people arrested

Hyderabad:

A police team was attacked by a mob and its vehicle damaged when it reached a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi to control a fracas at a wedding, officials said on Sunday.

Police have arrested 11 people in connection with the incident, which occurred on Saturday during a wedding procession that had reached Mahjuda village from Chaubepur in Varanasi, they said.

The mob surrounded three police officers at the scene and they had to flee. A larger team had to be sent to bring the situation under control, they added.

Superintendent of Police Meenakshi Katyayan said police had received information that people on the bride and groom’s side were fighting and creating a ruckus after consuming alcohol.

When police arrived at the scene, they found many drunk people on the street. When police tried to take them away from the street, they started shouting that the police were beating them, Katyayan said.

The SP said this angered people from both the bride and groom’s side. They attacked the police team and started beating constables Radheshyam, Vikas and Awadhesh Pathak, she said.

Surrounded by the mob, the three police officers tried to escape to save their lives, she said.

The crowd smashed the windows of their police vehicle with sticks, chased the police officers for a while and threw stones at them, the officer said.

In the meantime, a police officer had contacted the control center, whereupon a large police contingent arrived on the scene and brought the situation under control.

The SP said that a complaint had been filed against 10 named and 40 unknown persons late on Saturday evening. By Sunday, 11 people, including three women, had been arrested.

Efforts are underway to arrest the rest of the group, she said.
