70-year-old and minor raped in separate incidents in Goalpara

GOALPARA (Assam): A 70-year-old woman and a minor were allegedly raped in separate incidents in Assam’s Goalpara district, police said on Sunday.

The elderly woman was taking her cattle to graze near her house in Matia area when she was allegedly raped by a youth on Saturday afternoon after he covered her mouth with a cloth.

“When the youth tried to kill her after raping her, she bit him and escaped. We have taken the woman for medical examination and are awaiting the report,” a senior police official told PTI.

Police arrested the accused on Sunday, he added.

In another incident, on July 9, an 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the driver of her school bus in Siluk Majpara village under Dudhnoi police station area.

“She had not told anyone about it because the accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she did so. But yesterday she complained of severe stomach pain. When her mother asked her about it, she told her everything,” the officer said.

The accused, who took the girl in his school bus, is said to have raped her when no one was at home. He came into the house under the pretext of fetching water to drink, police said.

“Her family filed a complaint at the police station on Sunday and we nabbed the accused,” he added.
