Indiana murder suspect arrested in Berrien County

Berrien County Sheriff's Department

Thanks to a roadside license plate reader and actions by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, an Indiana murder suspect is in police custody.

The agency said Deputy Micah Carlson arrested the 48-year-old suspect in New Buffalo Township after receiving word that the suspect was in the area Saturday evening.

The agency says it, like many other law enforcement agencies across the country, has worked with local communities and businesses to purchase and maintain license plate reader cameras along public roads. The license plate readers, known as LPRs, monitor vehicles and notify patrol officers when a stolen vehicle or wanted person is spotted.

In this case, the license plate reader spotted the Indiana suspect in New Buffalo Township and alerted the deputy.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says technologies like LPRs are a complement to law enforcement and Berrien County as a whole. It says “efficient information sharing between law enforcement agencies increases the safety of the men and women in the force.”
