Main accused arrested in Kolkata attack on real estate agent who refused ‘blackmail offer’ | Kolkata News

Police on Sunday arrested the main accused in a case in which a real estate agent in north Kolkata was beaten up and his office ransacked, allegedly after he refused to pay a sum of Rs 500,000 demanded by a worker of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

According to sources, TMC supporter Avijit Mandal alias Rana, the main accused in connection with the attack on real estate agent Abhijit Sarkar in Cossipore on Friday night, was arrested in Kharagpur while he was trying to leave West Bengal.

According to police and Sarkar, a group of men with links to a local TMC worker demanded Rs 500,000 (about 450,000 euros) to vacate a plot of land in Rajendra Nath Roychowdhury Lane in Sithi, where the realtor was working on the construction of a multi-storey building.

Video footage shows the attackers arriving on motorcycles, ransacking the broker’s office and stealing money and a ring.

Sarkar says the attackers have links to Jayant Singh, a controversial TMC strongman with a history of violence.

Festive offer

TMC deputy mayor Atin Ghosh, who was also named by Sarkar, said he was unaware of the incident.

In this case, six people were arrested for extortion, assault and grievous bodily harm. They are being held in custody until July 18.
