Nigerian police arrest cops for alleged rape of teenager

Police in Lagos State said they had arrested one of their officers for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Command Area H in Ogudu.

However, the command’s spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed this to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Saturday, denied reports that the police authority was shielding the alleged rapist.

Mr Hundeyin explained that the official in question had been absent from work since the alleged incident and only presented himself for questioning on Saturday.

The image maker, who assured the public that the matter would not be swept under the carpet, said that the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Adegoke Fayoade, had directed the Gender Unit of the command to investigate the case immediately.

“The case is being fully investigated. There is no plan to cover up the allegation,” he said.

NAN had earlier reported that a 17-year-old girl (name withheld) reported to her parents a case of rape by a superior officer of Area H Command Ogudu, Ojota Region.

NAN learnt that the girl was the victim of an alleged brutal sexual assault by criminals while trying to recover her allegedly stolen phone.

NAN’s investigations revealed that the said police officer, who got wind of the theft of the phone, after recording the girl’s statement, offered to help in locating her missing phone.

It was also revealed that the officer, identified only as Owolabi, allegedly misled the teenager by giving him false information that police officers had arrested the suspected thief.

“The officer then lured the girl with false information. When she arrived at his office, he allegedly raped the girl at gunpoint,” a source said.
