A roadside spectator who threw chips in the faces of Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard was arrested and held in a police cell overnight, French media reported.

The incident, which was captured on film and quickly made the rounds on social media, occurred on Saturday in the heat of the battle for stage 14, when Slovenian Pogacar broke away from the defending champion.

The shirtless spectator appeared to have thrown the potato chips in the faces of the two drivers. According to witnesses, he was removed by police within five minutes of the incident.

“I don’t understand people who go to a cycling race to throw potato chips,” said two-time title holder Vingegaard at the finish.

The professional cyclists’ union CPA announced that it wanted to sue the spectator.

The fan was reportedly too drunk to give a statement, so police detained him overnight so he could give his statement on Sunday morning.

Pogacar won the stage, retained the yellow jersey and extended his lead over second-placed Vingegaard to 1 minute and 57 seconds.
