Flour traders cease operations in Jamrud

Khyber – meal dealer have hired their business in the Jamrud region in protest against the new government’s new withholding tax.

The government has imposed a withholding tax on flour mills, which has led to a rise in the price of the produce. Flour sellers in Jamrud Bazaar said that mill owners and traders’ associations across the country have started protesting against what they consider to be an unjustified tax.

They argued that the imposition of withholding tax on flour would directly affect the poor. As a sign of integration into the community, they closed their trading centres in protest. They added that the high tax on flour mills would lead to further price increases, thereby depriving the poor of basic services.

In other countries, food items are exempted from all taxes to ensure the needs of the poor, while in Pakistan, adverse tax policies are being implemented to put even more pressure on citizens. They threatened to continue their strike across the country until the withholding tax on flour is abolished.
