Strike of medical laboratory workers is suspended

The Medical Laboratory Professionals Union (MELPWU) in Ghana has decided to temporarily suspend the ongoing strike announced earlier this month. Union members are expected to return to work on Monday, June 24, in preparation for full resumption of work on Tuesday, June 25.

This decision was taken following a meeting between the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. During a press conference, the General Secretary of the union, Dr. Cephas Kofi Akortor, stated that the union had decided to call off the industrial action after considering the directives of the NLC and other stakeholders.

Dr. Akortor also addressed the abuses that some managers and administrators had subjected to the union members and warned them to desist from such actions. He stressed that if such behaviour continued, the union would not hesitate to report the issue to the NLC for resolution.

The union apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused during the strike and assured them of consistent professional service in the future. The strike, which began on June 17, affected services in medical laboratories, blood banks, pathology labs and some mortuaries across the country.

The closure of laboratory units at the Manhyia Government Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi was also a result of the strike. Patients were advised to turn to private laboratories but expressed concerns about the high costs involved.

The MELPWU had launched the strike in response to delays in negotiations with the Fair Wages Commission and the Ministry of Finance. The union had demanded better conditions for its members and protested against intimidation by the authorities.

As the union prepares to resume full operations, both workers and customers hope for a smoother collaboration that puts the well-being of medical staff and patients alike at the forefront.
