Suspect shot dead by police near fast food restaurant in Tuscaloosa

An investigation is underway in Tuscaloosa following a police officer-involved shooting. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said officers were called to a Whataburger restaurant on McFarland Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. on July 13. Officers spotted a person at the scene who appeared to be trespassing and attempted to arrest them when a knife was displayed and an officer was injured, according to TVCU. Tuscaloosa police officers opened fire on the man, striking him multiple times. He later died at the scene, according to a news release. TVCU identified the person as Joseph Driver. We’re told the injured officer was taken away for medical attention and is recovering. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. An investigation is underway in Tuscaloosa following a shooting involving police officers.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said officers were called to a Whataburger restaurant on McFarland Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. on July 13.

Officers spotted a person at the scene who appeared to be trespassing and attempted to arrest them when a knife was displayed and an officer was injured, TVCU reported.

Tuscaloosa police officers opened fire on the man, hitting him multiple times. According to a press release, he later died at the scene.

TVCU identified the person as Joseph Driver.

We were told that the injured officer was taken away for medical treatment and is recovering.

Both officers have been placed on leave while the investigation continues.
