Hampton 19-year-old charged in shootout with Newport News police in March

Police believe Darion Sadek Lindsay shot an unmarked police officer who was following his vehicle.

HAMPTON, Virginia – A Hampton man wanted in connection with a shootout with Newport News Police detectives in March has been arrested.

In a statement released online on Friday, the Hampton Police Division (HPD) announced that 19-year-old Darion Sadek Lindsay is charged with the following offenses:

  • 2 cases of attempted intentional bodily harm
  • two cases of attempted use of a firearm for the purpose of intentional bodily harm
  • Shooting at an occupied vehicle
  • Shooting from a vehicle
  • Conspiracy to commit malicious bodily harm

The charges stem from an incident that occurred late in the evening of March 18.

Detectives from a civilian unit of the Newport News Police Department pursued a vehicle they believed to be containing a wanted person and followed it to the town of Hampton.

Police say the vehicle stopped on Patrick Street around 10:20 p.m. and an unknown person got out and fired at officers, prompting officers to fire back, according to a Hampton Police Department investigation.

Police now believe Lindsay was the unknown person. They say he fled the scene and may have gone to the Hampton Sentara CarePlex for treatment of his injuries.

The police vehicle was hit several times by gunfire, but the officers remained unharmed.

Police have not released any further information about the person being pursued by Newport News detectives.
