Record heatwave this weekend for southern Colorado

Today’s forecast:
After temperatures rose above 90 degrees on Friday from Colorado Springs to Pueblo to Canon City, it will be that time again on Saturday as heat continues to be the big issue across Southern Colorado. If we reach 90 degrees in Colorado Springs this afternoon, it will be only the third time we have had temperatures above 90 degrees on two consecutive days. The other two such occurrences were on June 23-24, 2012 and June 23-24, 1954.

Temperatures will fall slowly this evening. Thunderstorms are possible in the mountains today and isolated storms may develop over the plains in the far east.

Weather forecast for Colorado Springs: High: 100; Low: 65. As the heat wave continues this weekend, it’s possible we’ll see another day or two of triple-digit temperatures in Colorado Springs. Current record today: 100° (1954).

Pueblo Forecast: High: 106; Low: 65. After a record high of 106° in Pueblo on Friday, we are forecasting an almost equally hot day in the Steel City on Saturday. Current record today: 109° (2003).

Weather forecast for Canon City: High: 102; Low: 68. Today looks almost like a carbon copy of yesterday, which means eastern Fremont County will likely see triple-digit temperatures again.

Weather forecast for Woodland Park: High: 89; Low: 54. Although temperatures above 30 degrees are better than 38 degrees, it is still hot, especially in Woodland Park. Clouds will increase again this afternoon and a shower or two is still possible throughout the county.

Tri-Lakes Forecast: High: 90s; Low: 60s. The Palmer Divide region will once again be hit by scorching heat this afternoon as highs rise back into the mid to upper 90s today.

Weather forecast for the plains: High: 100s; Low: 60s/70s. Highs in the eastern Plains could exceed 105-108° in some areas. A heat advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. Stay cool!

Weather forecast for Walsenburg and Trinidad: High: 90s; Low: 10 to 15 degrees. It will be hot almost everywhere this weekend, including the southern I-25 corridor. Afternoon highs will rise to 35 to 40 degrees today.

Mountain forecast: High: 70s/80s; Low: 40s/50s. A warm weekend for the mountains, with highs of 21 to 25 degrees in the afternoon. A few isolated storms possible today, with storms becoming more frequent Sunday and into next week.

Extended outlook:
The high on Sunday will remain at 100 degrees in Colorado Springs, my official forecast is 99 degrees. During this time, temperatures will continue to be in the triple digits from Pueblo and Canon City to the High Plains to the east. Monday will be a transition day as the intense heat dome weakens and moves west again. While it will still be hot, this should allow for a cooldown of about 3-5 degrees across the region.

After a few possible thunderstorms late Monday, rain chances increase mid-next week. Heavy rain with numerous showers and thunderstorms are possible in Southern Colorado Tuesday through Wednesday. Highs will drop to above 80 degrees in the Plains midweek, a refreshing change from this weekend’s triple-digit temperatures.
