Civil defense in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip said at least 20 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a makeshift mosque in the Al-Shati refugee camp in the north of the area on Saturday.

“The number of martyrs in the Al-Shati massacre has risen to 20 and there are still numerous injured and in serious condition,” Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal told AFP.

There was initially no comment from the Israeli military.

Palestinians were seen searching the razed remains of the makeshift mosque west of Gaza City after the deadly attack.

At the end of June, an Israeli bombardment hit the family home of Qatar-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, killing ten people, according to the Civil Defense Authority.

In the south of the Gaza Strip, Israel said on Saturday that it had targeted Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.

According to the Ministry of Health, at least 90 people were killed in Al-Mawasi, half of them women and children, and another 300 were injured, many of them in “critical” condition.

The majority of Gaza’s 2.4 million inhabitants have been displaced by the war, which has now lasted for ten months.
