“We would like to thank people for their kind messages and the support we have received over the past few days,” they added.

“You have given us great comfort, for which we are very grateful.”

They added that they needed space to process what had happened and “begin the grieving process.”

“As this happens, we ask that you respect our privacy and that of our extended family and relatives. Thank you.”

In a statement read to Sky Sports Racing viewers by his colleague Matt Chapman, Mr Hunt paid tribute to his “wonderfully inspirational” daughter Amy.

He said: “Despite the terrible evil that has struck our lives and caused devastation of unimaginable proportions, there have been stunning messages of support to counterbalance this, some of which can still be read.

“Amy, my eldest daughter, has been a wonderful inspiration to me with her self-control and support, and I try to emulate that with all my strength.

“Every message felt so important, like a comforting hug.”
