Teenager dead after shooting in downtown Willoughby; 23-year-old taken into custody

Willoughby police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning that left a 17-year-old boy dead.

At around 12:30 a.m., police responded to a shooting in downtown Willoughby. Upon arrival, officers found the teenager lying in an alley on Erie Street.

Willoughby ambulance and fire services arrived at the scene and immediately provided aid to the 17-year-old. However, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, police said.

During the investigation into the shooting, detectives concluded that a 23-year-old from Painesville may have been responsible for the teenager’s death, police said.

The person was found on Interstate 90/80 in Indiana around 10 a.m. on Saturday. With the help of the Indiana State Police, the person’s vehicle was stopped and the person was taken into custody, police said.

It is believed that only the victim and the 23-year-old were involved in the shooting, but police said a motive had not yet been identified.

The shooting remains under investigation and witnesses are asked to contact Willoughby’s Detective Bureau at 440-953-4210.
