Madison teenager shot dead in Willoughby; Painesville man arrested in Indiana

The 17-year-old died of his gunshot wounds at the scene. A 23-year-old suspect from Painesville was arrested hours later in Indiana.

CLEVELAND – A 17-year-old Madison boy was fatally shot in a Willoughby alley early Saturday morning. Hours later, police in Indiana were searching for a suspect, authorities said.

At around 12:30 a.m., police were called to the alley next to a restaurant at 4066 Erie Street for a shooting. A witness told police he heard a gunshot across the street and saw a victim lying on the ground while a man allegedly ran west from the scene.

The 17-year-old from Madison was found at the end of the alley. Police and paramedics administered first aid, but the teenager presumably died at the scene.

Detectives investigated and identified a 23-year-old Painesville man as the suspect. Police said the 23-year-old was traveling on I-90 and I-80 in Indiana around 10 a.m. Indiana State Police officers assisted in locating the suspect’s car and arrested the man.

The investigation agency is still investigating the cause of the incident. The nature of the relationship between the suspect and the victim is unclear to investigators. Police believe that no other people were involved in the alleged shooting.

The Ohio BCI and the Lake County District Attorney’s Office arrived at the scene.
