A man has been arrested after human remains were discovered in suitcases at the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

The 24-year-old was arrested by armed officers from Avon and Somerset Roads Policing at Temple Meads station in Bristol in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The remains found in luggage and in a flat in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, belong to two men, police said.

Deputy Police Chief Andy Valentine said the arrest was “a significant development”.

“We understand the concerns of the local communities in Bristol and London and officers will remain in the Clifton and Shepherd’s Bush areas over the coming days to reassure the victims of this tragic incident,” he added.

“Anyone who has concerns is encouraged to speak to them.”

The police are not looking for anyone else and the suspect is being taken to London for questioning.

Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, Avon and Somerset Police received a report of a man with a suitcase acting suspiciously on the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Officers arrived within 10 minutes, but the man had already left, leaving the suitcases behind. A second suitcase was found nearby.

The Metropolitan Police took over the investigation after body parts were found in a flat in Scott’s Road, west London.

Police said the two victims had not yet been officially identified.

A 36-year-old man who was arrested on Friday in connection with the investigation in Greenwich, south-east London, has since been released without charge.
