Before “Rust,” “Midnight Rider” killed train employee

(NewsNation) — The death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Alec Baldwin’s film “Rust” is a tragic reminder that the stars and directors are not the only people involved in the making of films.

Sometimes it’s the crew members who pay the price when something goes wrong on set.

Sarah Jones, one of the camera assistants on the film “Midnight Rider,” died in 2014 while filming a scene on a bridge trestle.

Without proper permits, a train unexpectedly approached the set and the crew had only seconds to get to safety. Johnson was fatally struck by the train and seven other crew members were injured.

A video of the incident was shown in court and prosecutors charged four members of the film’s management team with manslaughter. The film’s director, Randall Miller, spent a year in prison as a result.

Since the tragedy, responsibility and safety in the industry have been important goals for Johnson’s parents, Richard and Elizabeth. In 2014, they founded the organization Safety for Sarah in the hope that remembering their daughter’s death will help improve safety on film sets.

Richard Jones told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas that the Rust trial was a painful reminder of his daughter’s death.

“It felt like it was happening again. I just feel sick,” Richard Jones said during an appearance on “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.” “After Sarah died, we started the nonprofit with the basic idea of never forgetting what happened when safety was not a priority.”
