Rescue workers recovered five bodies from the river, the fire department said in a statement on its Facebook page late Friday.

The bodies of three men, a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were taken to Yangon General Hospital, it said.

Boating accidents are common in Myanmar, a poor country with rudimentary transportation options and poorly enforced safety regulations.

In 2016, 73 people, including many teachers and students, drowned when their overloaded boat capsized on the Chindwin River in central Myanmar.

During the rainy season from June to October, heavy rainfall causes rivers in the Southeast Asian country to swell, making travel and shipping difficult.
