Family holds vigil for two-year-old killed in Houma

In July 2022, Harry was found dead in a trash can. The tragedy prompted state lawmakers to pass Ezekiel’s Law, which changed the way child abuse cases are handled.

HOUMA, Louisiana – Two years after his death, friends and family are still mourning the loss of young Ezekiel Harry.

“It’s still pretty hard,” said Ezekiel’s grandmother Cynthia Harry. “It’s still difficult and hard to believe that this happened.”

They say time heals all wounds.

“We really miss him,” said Harry.

This is not the case for anyone who knew two-year-old Ezekiel Harry.

“He was very playful. He liked to go to everyone. I liked being around him. He was my baby,” Harry said.

On Thursday, his family held a vigil. His grandmother, Cynthia Harry, spoke about how different life would be if her baby were still here.

“At my house, he was running around, trying to put my dishes out, playing with my keys, knocking on my door and coming to get in bed with me,” Harry said.

In July 2022, Harry was found dead in a garbage can. Investigators believe he died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Those accused of murder are his own mother, Maya Jones, and her partner, Jermaine Robinson.

“Today is his mother’s birthday,” said Michael Willis, a family friend. “The day he was killed.”

Both Jones and Robinson are expected to appear in court for a hearing later this month.

“It’s been a difficult situation since I came to two years ago,” Willis said.

According to Michael Willis, a family friend, this hearing comes two years too late.

“It’s hard on the family, the endless wait to see if justice is done,” Willis said.

For Harry’s family, the vigil was part of the farewell, but his loss is a wound that time cannot heal.

“It will be a difficult process,” Willis said.
