Man arrested for illegal disposal of chicken byproducts in Jackson

JACKSON, Mississippi (WJTV) – Jackson officials are sending a clear message to anyone who illegally dumps their trash in the city.

Police arrested 43-year-old Billy Stewart for illegally dumping chicken byproducts, oil and other substances on South McRaven Road. They said he dumped the substances from the hopper of his semi-trailer.

In June 2024, residents complained to the city about the foul odor. The city contacted the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to have the area cleaned up. Neighbors said the area was cleaned by the MDEQ after two weeks.

City Councilman Brian Grizzell of Ward 4 hopes Stewart’s arrest sends a strong message that crime is not welcome in the capital.

“This is a really quiet community. And we came here shortly after June 20th where we saw a lot of this waste ourselves. And so you see biohazardous material on a community street. This may seem like a rural area to a lot of people, but what happened here is very criminal. And I really hope and pray that he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Grizzell said.

The City Council plans to contact MDEQ again regarding hazardous materials along certain sections of McRaven Road.
