Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith takes massive swing at Buffalo ahead of 2024 NFL season

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills are two of the NFL’s biggest rivals. Both teams play in the AFC East, and the Bills have dominated the division for the past four years. Although the Dolphins got closer in 2023, they were still overtaken by their rivals and ended up in second place in the division.

Bills and Dolphins players often attack each other, but newly acquired Miami tight end Jonnu Smith took the time to make sure Buffalo knows how much he dislikes the area.

Smith joined “The Dive Bar Podcast,” where he spoke in depth about the city of Buffalo, highlighting deep feelings of dislike for the area and its famous cuisine.

“I don’t know how they did it,” Smith said. “To come from anywhere in the country and then go to Buffalo; that’s probably the worst place in the world to be. And Buffalo wings aren’t even good. They’re not even good. I’m in Buffalo. I’m against them. I throw all kinds of jabs at Buffalo.”

It’s one thing to take on a rival of the team you play for, but Smith decided to make his attack a little more personal by insulting the food that made the city famous. The Buffalo wing may be one of the most popular bar foods — perhaps more so than any food associated with football — but Smith said the city where it was created doesn’t showcase that food in the best way.

While the Buffalo-Miami rivalry is well-known, Smith may have just invited Dolphins and Bills fans to begin a deeper discussion that extends beyond what either team has been able to accomplish in recent years.

The Dolphins have made the playoffs the past two years under new head coach Mike McDaniel, although they also lost in the Wild Card round of the 2022 and 2023 playoffs. The 2022 season was particularly difficult, as the Dolphins traveled to Buffalo to face the Bills, but lost by a final score of 34-31.

In 2023, the Dolphins were neck and neck with the Bills for the AFC East title. They lost to their rivals in Week 18, allowing the Bills to clinch their fourth consecutive AFC East title.

With Josh Allen under center, the Bills have been tough to beat, although they haven’t been able to beat the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs.

The Bills and Dolphins both upgraded their rosters this offseason, including Smith’s arrival in Miami. Smith bounced back with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, throwing for 582 yards and three touchdowns.

He joins a high-powered Dolphins offense that could finally overtake the Bills for the AFC East. At the very least, Smith is already entering one of the NFL’s oldest rivalries.
