Police search neighborhood where 13-year-old was shot

Six suspects parked two vehicles on a neighboring side street before walking to the apartment complex and opening fire, officials said. The identities and motive of those six suspects are unknown, police said.

With so little information available, police Maj. Pete Malecki said the purpose of the survey was to “get as much information as possible from the community.” Officials had previously described the area as a “gang stronghold,” but Malecki said it was not clear whether the shooting was gang-related.

The canvassing included distributing leaflets and knocking on doors inside and outside the apartment complex. As the trial began, neighbors waited in the doorways of their homes, some speaking with investigators, others watching from afar.

“We have achieved a certain level of cooperation, but we know there is more to be achieved,” said Malecki.

Two women, one holding a baby, sat outside a house across the street from the complex and spoke with investigators. Another man approached officers from a house down the street and described what he saw the night of the shooting.

Crime Stoppers Atlanta is offering a $50,000 reward for any information regarding the incident, including anonymous tips.

Freeman had turned 13 30 minutes before the fatal shooting. Now birthday balloons hang in the stairwell of her apartment and two stuffed animals sit underneath, surrounded by candles and various toys.

“We have two children in the community who did nothing at all and it cost them their lives,” Malecki said.

Fifty community members gathered on July 3 for a candlelight vigil in memory of the teens.

“Whether you are an eyewitness or have just heard information in the neighborhood, we want to know and therefore ask you to come forward and give us this information,” said Malecki.
