Investigated former detective resigns from San Angelo Police Department

An off-duty police officer who was arrested for drunk driving has resigned from the San Angelo Police Department, a press release said.

Former Detective James Hernandez submitted his resignation on Monday. Hernandez served with the SAPD for 17 years.

Hernandez was released from the Tom Green County Jail on $1,500 bail on Friday and is charged with a second offense of driving under the influence, according to jail records.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Hernandez was arrested for drunken driving in the early hours of July 4, which prompted an immediate internal review, according to Wednesday’s press release.

“The San Angelo Police Department takes such matters very seriously, and the actions of an officer do not reflect the values or conduct of the police department or its other officers,” police officials said in the release. “The police department remains committed to transparency and accountability.”
