Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta Salsa Dance and Perform Salsa – 95.5 WSB

ATLANTA — Ruby Kirkwood, 10, and her friends say the best recipes have the best ingredients.

“Yes, they come from the underground roots. When you plant seeds,” Ruby said.

Seeds that grow into vegetables that they use to make salsa.

“We love the way we did it and we love sharing it with everyone,” said 6th grader Jake Perez.

Jake and Ruby are part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta cooking and gardening program.

Over the past few months, dozens of children have grown and harvested these products.

On Wednesday, they donned chef’s hats to create absolutely delicious sauces.

“Not only can they learn how to create something healthy at home, but it’s also a future. Hey, it’s a career,” said the club’s vice president of youth development, Marlon Montgomery.

It was also a contest. Former Atlanta Falcons lineman Cliff Matthews was one of the celebrity judges.

The annual “Salsa, Salsa” event, as it is called, was sponsored by the Falcons Foundation and Willy’s Mexicana Grille, which also made a significant donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs.

The children learned how to prepare salsa and how to “make” salsa.

Ruby felt right at home on the dance floor and in the kitchen.

“The salsa is so good!” Berndt Petersen from Channel 2 Ruby asked.

“It’s ten times higher than the world,” Ruby said.

The East DeKalb Club won the contest, and here’s the catch: The winning salsa will be on the menu later this month at Willy’s Mexicana Grille in Roswell.
