Houston Fire Chief Urges Generator Safety After Hollow Oak House Fire

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Houston Fire Department (HFD) officials responded to a house fire around 11 p.m. in Bending Oaks and Hollow Oaks. Arriving responders worked to extinguish the fire in the single-story home. There was reportedly no power in the area. The fire chief said he believes the fire originated from a generator. He also urged Houston residents to use generators safely to avoid

Many people are using generators right now and it is very important that everyone follows safety precautions. HFD has provided some tips to help keep you and your family safe:

• NEVER Run generators inside your home or in an area that is not well ventilated, such as a garage, small side deck, or covered porch.
• Generators should be placed at at least 20 feet away houses, windows, doors and vents.
• Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector if you use gas or a gas or wood fireplace for your heat or anything that burns fuel, including generators.
• Install a carbon monoxide detector in the hallway, near each separate sleeping area in the home.
• If your CO alarm goes off, ventilate the house with fresh air by opening windows and doors.
