Revealed – the exact location where suspension bridge last saw human remains in suspect’s suitcase

The photographs of the man wanted by police in connection with the discovery of human remains in two suitcases at the Clifton Suspension Bridge on Wednesday evening (July 10) were taken 460 metres away on a residential street.

Bristol Live can reveal that the two photographs shared by police were taken on the street outside the gate of the last house on Burwalls Road, the winding residential road that runs south from Bridge Road, just before the junction with Rownham Hill.

Bristol Live reported yesterday how, in the minutes between the suitcases being left next to the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the police arriving, an eyewitness saw a man running down Burwalls Road, pursued by a cyclist.

Updates: Day 2 of manhunt after police find human remains on Clifton Suspension Bridge

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, a major manhunt by air and ground began, involving both police and coast guard helicopters. However, the man managed to evade the manhunt and is still at large this morning, Friday, July 12.

Avon and Somerset Police said yesterday the man had veered off the bridge towards Leigh Woods – and had not run to the Clifton side of the bridge. The photographs released by police confirm the eyewitness account that the man had run down Burwalls Road in the village of Leigh Woods, rather than into the public woodland of Leigh Woods itself, the entrance to which is more than half a mile to the north-west.

It is not known where the wanted man went after these photographs were taken and this is a key part of the police investigation. He may have gone into the woods at Burwalls Camp, which lie south of the rope bridge, and eventually descended the hill through the woods to end up on the river path at Ashton Meadows. He then continued up Rownham Hill and further down the main road to Bower Ashton, turning west to Ashton Court or returning to the village of Leigh Woods.

Police are asking for sightings, doorbell cameras or information on the man from Wednesday evening, as well as information on his identity and current whereabouts.

A police spokesman said: “A large-scale search operation was carried out for several hours, including the police helicopter and Her Majesty’s Coastguard, but the man could not be found.”

“We are currently reviewing CCTV and working to trace the man’s movements after he left the bridge. These investigations are intended to guide officers on the scene. At this time, we are not aware of any current threat to the general public.

“Extra high visibility patrols are being carried out in the area and if anyone has any concerns they are advised to speak to an officer. Anyone with information about the man’s whereabouts is asked to call us on 999 as this will allow information to be passed on quickly to officers searching for him.

“All information (excluding sightings) can be reported on our Major Incident Public Portal or by calling 0800 056 0944 (if calling from the UK) or 0207 158 0010 (from abroad),” he added.

Finding the photos

Avon and Somerset Police have released two photographs taken by the man they wish to question in connection with the investigation into the suitcases containing body parts left at the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

They show a man from behind, turning towards the photographer at night. He is black, wearing black clothing and a backpack, and matches the description of the man given by the police at the same time.

It is night time and the background of the upright photo shows him to be on a road, in front of a driveway, with broken double yellow lines to his right. The road curves to the right, with a hedge on either side.

The second photo shows a slightly different angle and is more cropped on the man’s face, showing that behind him is a wide gate with a curved top.

This place is the corner of Burwalls Road, before the last house on the road.
