3-year-old killed, 2-year-old sister injured after being hit by SUV in Harlem, Manhattan; driver tries to take girls to hospital

HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) — A mother and her three young children were crossing the street in Harlem when two of the toddlers were hit by a car.

The tragedy occurred around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday at the corner of West 135th Street and Lenox Avenue, right in front of Harlem Hospital.

The 40-year-old driver immediately intervened and tried to take the three-year-old girl to the hospital on foot. But his attempt was in vain, the girl could not be saved.

Her two-year-old sister suffered minor injuries. The 37-year-old mother and a four-month-old sibling were uninjured.

Investigators say the driver was in a Nissan SUV on Lenox Avenue and turned left onto West 135th Street when the children were struck.

The driver stayed to answer questions from the police.

The investigation is ongoing, but no arrests have been made so far.
