Police continue to work to find a motive for a mass shooting in Alameda.

Investigators have arrested a man who allegedly killed his wife, six-year-old son, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and left his one-year-old son in critical condition.

After Wednesday’s shooting, the community is still trying to make sense of this tragedy.

On Thursday, neighbors on Kitty Hawk Road couldn’t believe someone could inflict such violence on their own family. Neighbors and friends also helped clean up bloodstains in the driveway of a home where police said an elderly man made a last-ditch effort to help his family after being shot by his son-in-law.

“The oldest victim said he had been shot and was dying,” said Chris, a neighbor who declined to give their last names.

Chris said the victim showed up bleeding at his door around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police arrived within minutes. They said while they were trying to treat the man, the suspected shooter came out of the house next door.

The man was arrested and a few minutes later the officers said they found four more people shot dead in the house.

“What he did was tragic, sad and the act of a coward,” said Alameda Police Chief Nishant Joshi.

Police have identified the man they arrested as 54-year-old Shane Parrish Killian. They believe he shot his wife, 6-year-old son, mother-in-law and father-in-law. Police also believe Parrish shot his 1-year-old son, who was in critical condition late Thursday.

Neighbors said the family had only recently moved to the block and they hadn’t noticed any warning signs. One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said he remembered the little boys as sweet and playful.

Meanwhile, friends and neighbors are wondering how this could have happened and what will happen next.

“I don’t know how to tell my three-year-old when he asks where his friend is,” said a neighbor. “How should I answer that?”
