Watch: Two planes narrowly avoid collision at Syracuse Airport in New York; FAA investigates incident

On July 8, a dramatic near-collision was captured on video over Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, New York, when two U.S. commercial airliners narrowly avoided a collision.

The incident, which was captured by the North Syracuse Police Department’s dashboard camera, is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has not yet classified it as a “near-collision.” The aircraft involved were PSA Airlines Flight 5511, an American Airlines regional flight, and Endeavor Air Flight 5421, a Delta Connection flight.

PSA Airlines 5511 was coming from Washington, while Endeavor Air 5421 was heading to New York. Both flights carried a total of 151 passengers and eight crew members, and no injuries were reported.

According to US media reports, the cockpit alarm of American Airlines Flight 5511 sounded when Delta Airlines Flight 5421 came dangerously close. The alarm, which is normally triggered about 20 seconds before a possible collision, alerted the crew to the proximity of the other aircraft.

According to FAA officials, the near miss occurred around 11:50 a.m. when an air traffic controller instructed PSA Airlines 5511 to make a go-around to avoid a plane departing from the same runway. Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed the two planes approaching within 700-1,000 feet vertically.

Despite concerns, experts have indicated that the planes were not on a direct collision course. However, air traffic control audio recordings indicated that there was a potential risk. Air traffic control cleared PSA Airlines 5511 to land while allowing Endeavor Air 5421 to take off from runway 28.
