Vacaville police officer killed in accident during traffic stop

A Vacaville police officer was killed in the line of duty after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop Thursday morning, police said. The driver was taken into custody. Matthew Bowen began working with the department on June 13, 2023, and was previously a police officer in Concord. “He served with the utmost dedication and honor, and his loss is deeply regretted by the department, city and community,” the department said in a statement. “He leaves behind his wife, two sons, parents and a brother.” The intersection of Leisure Town Road and Orange Drive has been closed while officers investigate, police said. There is no estimated time for the road to reopen. The westbound freeway ramp is also closed near the crash site. According to California Highway Patrol traffic logs, the crash was reported at 10:31 a.m. A heavily damaged police motorcycle was seen at the crash scene. Our teams on scene also saw a gray sedan with significant front bumper damage, as well as a Vacaville police motorcycle torn in half. Another vehicle with left rear tire damage and a fourth vehicle are also involved. The CHP’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) and a Fairfield Police Department patrol car are on scene. Vacaville Police said Bowen was taken to Kaiser Hospital after the crash and was pronounced dead. “It is with great gratitude that we thank our neighboring agencies who have provided us with a tremendous amount of support during this time. We ask that the public respect the family’s privacy as they face this heartbreaking loss,” Vacaville Police said. The city’s police chief will make a statement at 6:30 p.m. Some flowers were laid outside the police station. The CHP is investigating. California State Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa) issued the following statement: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Officer Bowen, who dedicated his life to keeping our community safe.
