CONMEBOL launches investigation into clash between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans at Copa America

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has launched an investigation into the clash between Uruguayan players and Colombian fans following the Copa America semi-final on Wednesday.

Several Uruguayan players, including Darwin Nunez, clashed with Colombian fans after the game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Clashes broke out between fans in the stands when players entered the area of the stadium where their families, including children, were present.

A statement from CONMEBOL said: “The CONMEBOL Disciplinary Committee has opened an investigation to clarify the sequence of events and the responsibility of those involved in the violence at the end of the match between the national teams of Uruguay and Colombia.

“On the eve of the Copa América final, we would like to reiterate and warn that we will not tolerate any act that tarnishes this global football festival, which involves both the players and the fans present in the stadium and is watched by hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.

“It is unacceptable that passion turns into violence in an incident like this. Therefore, no behavior that harms sporting competition and the most beautiful spectacle in the world, which belongs to the entire football family, will be tolerated.”

Despite being reduced to ten men following the sending off of Daniel Munoz in the 46th minute, Colombia defeated Uruguay 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jefferson Lerma.

On Sunday they will face Argentina in the final at Hard Rock Stadium.
