Weather warning day: Dangerous heat Sunday-Tuesday with heat indices in the three-digit range

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day as dangerous heat may build through the end of the week and early next week.

The pattern in the upper atmosphere begins to shift as a high pressure system develops and expands westward, bringing south/southwest winds into the region, which in turn leads to higher heat and humidity over central Missouri.

This pattern looks set to continue through the weekend, with the hottest days occurring between Sunday and Tuesday. Highs will reach the upper 90s and dew points will be in the 70s. This combination creates dangerously hot conditions if you’re exposed to the heat for extended periods of time.

Heat indices will reach between 100 and 103 degrees on Saturday and above 105 degrees Sunday through Tuesday. Try to limit your time outdoors as much as possible during this time. It’s a good idea to keep pets indoors with plenty of water and avoid the hottest times of the day for bathroom breaks.

Know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. A person with heat stroke will experience a throbbing headache, stop sweating, have dry, hot skin, and a body temperature above 103. Call 911 immediately if you experience these symptoms.
