Homicide investigation launched after fatal shooting on Dryfield Drive, suspect fled scene | Texas

Austin, Texas – Officers with the Austin Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon on Dryfield Drive.

On July 10, 2024, at approximately 3:34 p.m., officers responded to several calls reporting a shooting at 8501 Dryfield Drive. According to Austin Police, a caller reported that a suspect shot someone and fled the scene. The suspect was described as a black male wearing a white shirt and black shorts, and other callers reported seeing him running through backyards while attempting to leave the area.

Upon arrival, officers found a white male with apparent gunshot wounds, later identified as 34-year-old Joshua Kozak of Austin, Texas. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (A/TCEMS) attempted life-saving measures, but at 4:03 p.m., Kozak was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators examined the scene and interviewed witnesses. The investigation determined that Kozak was shot by a black male suspect wearing a white tank top who was seen on surveillance video fleeing the area. Watch the video here.

The suspect is described as a black male who was last seen wearing a white sleeveless shirt and black shorts.

Investigators are asking anyone in the area of ​​8501 Dryfield Drive who may have video footage related to the murder to contact Austin police at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for information leading to an arrest.
