Pedestrian hit and killed while crossing highway to check on accident victim

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A pedestrian checking on the victim of a crash was killed after he was struck while attempting to cross Interstate 24 near the Tennessee Welcome Center on Interstate 24 in Montgomery County.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said Rex Welin and his wife witnessed a crash on I-24 at the 0.4 mile mark around 9:45 p.m. Welin and his wife pulled onto the right shoulder and then ran across the highway to check on the occupants of the accident they saw. Ms. Welin made it safely to her left shoulder. Rex Welin was struck by a Honda Ridgeline driven by Robert Dennett, 63, of Kentucky.

Welin, 66, of Minnesota, died at the scene. Dennett immediately drove onto the right shoulder after the accident.
