Police shoot a man in Caledonia Park on Wednesday

Police officers shot and killed a 37-year-old man in a Caledonia park on Wednesday after they said he shot at them first.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning at Cliffside Park in the village of Caledonia. A statement from the Wisconsin Department of Justice said officers responded to the park at 9:47 a.m. on a report of a “man on the ground.”

“The citizen stated that a male (‘suspect’) wearing black clothing was laying face down on a path and not moving,” said a social media post from the Racine County Sheriff’s Office. “The citizen stated that he did not feel safe to approach the suspect.”

The social media post said a Racine County Sheriff’s deputy and two Caledonia Police officers arrived at the scene.

“When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect fired a firearm,” the Justice Department statement said.

The statement said a response team including officers and first responders from the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, Caledonia Police Department, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and Caledonia Fire Department arrived at the scene.

“The response team attempted to negotiate with the individual, but circumstances arose that required law enforcement to use deadly force,” the statement said.

The man died at the scene, the statement said.

The officials concerned are currently on leave. It is still unclear how many are affected.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Office’s social media post said the person was a “37-year-old white male with ties to the City of Racine and the Village of Mount Pleasant.”
