Two Georgia players arrested for minor negligence

Senior linebacker Smael Mondon Jr. and redshirt freshman Bo Hughley were arrested on July 10 and July 9, respectively.

ATHENS, Ga. – Two Georgia State football players were arrested for reckless driving earlier this week.

Athens-Clarke County police officers arrested offensive tackle Bo Hughley and linebacker Smael Mondon Jr. on July 9 and 10 for minor driving while impaired.

They arrested Hughley around 8:30 p.m. on two charges – failure to maintain lane/improper driving on roadway and reckless driving.

He was released around 10 p.m. on $26 bail.

Mondon was arrested around 11 p.m. on two counts. He was also charged with reckless driving and speeding on highways/streets.

They released him on $26 bail at around 12:30 a.m. on July 11.

The Bulldogs football team expects Mondon not only to be a starter next season, but also to be the main leader among the linebackers.

The senior and former five-star player led the team in total tackles the past two seasons and, when on the field, has a chance to establish himself as the best inside linebacker in college football this season.

Hughley, on the other hand, saw little to no time on the field in his first year with the Bulldogs.

The 6-foot-9 redshirt freshman was a highly rated four-star prospect coming out of Fairburn in 2023.

They predict that he will play a key role as a backup this season and may take on a starting position in one season or another.

These are the second and third drunken driving charges against Georgia players this year and come months after Florida native Trevor Etienne was arrested for drunken driving in March.

The Bulldogs have had several speeding violations over the last few seasons.

Last year, former offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiter Chandler LeCroy died in an accident due to reckless speed.

2023 starters Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and Jamon Dumas-Johnson were both arrested for reckless driving in the same year. Both left the team via the NFL draft and the transfer portal, respectively.

In 2022, former starters Kenny McIntosh and Nolan Smith were arrested for speeding.

Head coach Kirby Smart spoke about reckless driving several times this year and in 2023.

While he said Georgia prepares these players better than any other college in the country, he also noted that this may be a problem that will never truly be solved.

“I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to eradicate speeding, I don’t know if that’s possible, but I’m going to damn well try because I don’t think what we’re doing right now is effective enough,” Smart said in July 2023.
