Atlanta Regional Commission Sees Growth, MARTA Receives Grant

11 July — The Atlanta Regional Commission released statistics showing that the 11-county metro area gained 62,700 residents last year. Fulton, Gwinnett, Cherokee and Cobb counties led the growth.

1. Atlanta History Center Reopens Margaret Mitchell House with Reimagined ‘Gone With the Wind’ Exhibit

🏡 The Atlanta History Center reopened the Margaret Mitchell House museum in Midtown yesterday with a new exhibit that takes a closer look at the popularity of “Gone With the Wind” — the novel and the film — and the influence it continues to have on American culture.

“Telling Stories: Gone With the Wind and American Memory” is the museum’s first exhibition since it closed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The museum, located at 10th and Peachtree streets, includes Margaret Mitchell’s apartment — nicknamed “The Dump” — where she wrote most of the novel.

In this environment, surrounded by supporters of the Confederacy, Mitchell learned what the Civil War meant. What he learned, however, is not historically accurate, as the exhibit shows.

2. Over 11 million job seekers use this Atlanta-based app to find work in their own area

📱 More than half of Americans work hourly jobs. And yet, major job sites aren’t designed for them, or their employers.

Most job sites, like LinkedIn and Indeed, focus on salaried positions and aren’t well-suited for high-turnover roles. This makes it difficult for employers to find new talent quickly. Additionally, employees have a hard time finding opportunities nearby, which means they often have to spend valuable time and money traveling to an hourly job miles away.

It’s a problem that Debbie and Mark Emery, two young entrepreneurs, noticed during their careers in HR technology. And it’s a problem they’re now trying to solve with Juvo Jobs, an Atlanta-based hourly recruiting app.

3. Sidetracked Wine Co.’s July 12 launch in Chamblee includes free bubbly all weekend

📈 Pinky Cole, CEO and founder of Slutty Vegan, was a featured speaker at the Founder to CEO Summit on July 1. Hosted by the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC), 1863 Ventures, and The Ayars Agency Inc., the event focused on “creating equity and providing solutions to the economic injustice faced by Black entrepreneurs, executives, and artists,” according to BMAC co-founder, president, and CEO Willie “Prophet” Stiggers.

🥇 Rome’s River Remedy Brewing Company won two gold medals at the U.S. Beer Championship. In the U.S. Specialty Wheat Beer category, Oostanaula Great White Ale took home the gold, and in the German Altbier category, Sabrewtage Altbier took home the gold. Held in Oxford, Ohio, the event judges more beers than any other competition in the world and ranks as the third largest beer competition in the world.
