USA Tour 2024: A carnival atmosphere awaits you in Atlanta | News | Official website

Chelsea’s third game of our summer tour of the USA takes us to Georgia to take on Club America – and you can expect some great times…

Anyone who attended our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Atlanta last summer, or who has been to any of our three previous games with Club America, knows what to expect: a party!

Atlanta loves its soccer. Its MLS team, Atlanta United, plays its home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium—where we’ll face Club America on Wednesday, July 31—and averages about 50,000 fans.

This is the second highest figure in North and South America. Only Flamengo in Brazil has a higher average attendance per home game.

The fans are making noise, helped by the fantastic acoustics inside the futuristic Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017 and boasts a retractable roof and eye-catching exterior design.

Our Chelsea supporters groups in America will no doubt be in fine form, led by the Georgia Blues, and if our previous games against Club America are any indicator, we can expect Mexican fans to travel in numbers.

The atmosphere was carnival-like on each of the three previous occasions we faced the Mexico City giants, buoyed by the expat community.

We first met in 2007 in Stanford, California, when goals from Florent Malouda and John Terry gave us a comeback win. Balloons, streamers and flags spanning the width of the pitch lit up the newly renovated stadium.

Two years later, we gathered for the second event ever held at the extraordinary AT&T Stadium, where, as Chelsea fan Matt Pursley recently told us, “the great atmosphere between Club America and the Chelsea fans was non-stop the whole time.” The Blues won again, this time 2-0.

Fast forward to 2022 and it was another ‘carnival’ atmosphere, as our match report described it, in a game that had its ups and downs and was ultimately won 2-1 by Chelsea in front of almost 50,000 spectators on a scorching night in Las Vegas.

Enzo Maresca and his players will be aiming for four wins out of four for Chelsea against the Mexicans, and in a city known for its love of the game, in a stadium as spectacular as any in the United States, and against a team with a fanatical fan base that is sure to cross the border in numbers, get ready to party!
