Liverpool seek talks with Darwin Núñez over Copa incident – Source

Liverpool need to hold urgent talks with Darwin Núñez and the Uruguayan Football Federation (UFF) to get a full picture of the events that led to the striker entering the stands after Wednesday’s Copa América semi-final and becoming involved in a physical altercation with Colombian fans, a source told ESPN.

Núñez faces a ban from the South American football association CONMEBOL, which runs the association. This could also extend to club football if the world football association FIFA intervenes and CONMEBOL imposes sanctions.

Colombia secured a meeting with world champions Argentina in Sunday’s final in Miami with a 1-0 win over Uruguay at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

But the incident after the game, when Núñez entered the stands to confront the spectators, now gives rise to fears that the 25-year-old could face a long ban for his behaviour.

The Uruguayan newspaper El Pais reported that the area that Núñez entered also housed friends and families of the Uruguayan team, prompting Núñez to try to protect his family.

But a source told ESPN that given the time difference between the UK and the US, Liverpool football club management will contact Núñez as soon as possible, primarily to check on his wellbeing and that of his family and to find out the facts behind the incident.

According to a source, Liverpool also plan to speak to the UFF before deciding on any possible action or statement on the situation.

Liverpool will travel to the USA for a pre-season tour later this month under new manager Arne Slot before starting their Premier League campaign away to Ipswich Town on August 17.

Due to his participation in the Copa América, Nunez was not expected to take part in Liverpool’s tour of the USA.
