Avon Police Investigate School Bus Driver’s Reported ‘Erratic Behavior’ – NBC Connecticut

“There was no erratic driving or anything like that to indicate that, but they were concerned enough to call,” Lt. John Schmalberger of the Avon Police Department.

Children and parents at Avon Public Schools alerted police to the erratic behavior of their bus driver Wednesday afternoon.

“Some shouted, some loud outbursts, some waved, but nothing was directed at the children,” said Lieutenant Schmalberger.

Officials said they received a call just after 3 p.m. Wednesday from a child on the bus and later from his parents.

“The parents came to the next bus stop and let the children get off the bus. There were no problems getting the children off the bus. All children were able to exit the bus safely,” said Lt. Schmalberger.

According to authorities, the driver followed protocol and drove the empty bus to the next stop, where police eventually spoke with him.

“When people are concerned about a person’s driving behavior, impaired driving is certainly at the forefront. There were no problems with that. There was no evidence that the bus driver was under the influence of narcotics, narcotics or alcohol,” said Lieutenant Schmalberger.

A letter from Avon Public Schools to parents described the incident.

It said the district is working with police and bus company Specialty Transportation “to ensure appropriate action is taken.”

“We’re just trying to figure out what’s going on, what really happened. I’m trying to get a video in case someone recorded a video on a cell phone. That’s where we arrived,” said Lieutenant Schmalberger.

Police said the driver was fully cooperative and no arrests were made.

NBC Connecticut reached out to Specialty Transportation and Avon Public Schools but was unable to provide further comment.
