Storm Beryl: Heavy rain threatens to cause flooding as storm moves northeast

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The remnants of Hurricane Beryl left tornadoes and threatened flooding Wednesday as the system headed toward Canada and the northeastern United States after killing millions in the Houston area. without power.

Beryl, which made landfall in Texas on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, was a post-tropical cyclone centered over southeastern Michigan around midday Wednesday with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (45 kph), the National Weather Service reported.

The threat of heavy rain and flooding extended from the Great Lakes to New England and included southern Canada. The storm dumped between 3 and 6 inches of rain in northern Indiana, saturating the ground and threatening to bring down trees in high winds.

At least one tornado touched down Wednesday afternoon in upstate New York, the weather service reported. Videos posted on social media showed swirling debris under threatening skies. It damaged trees and property in communities south of Buffalo, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said. No injuries were reported.

“I saw it go down, then back up, then back down again,” he said.
