One man died in fiery crash

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has released more information on a multi-vehicle fiery crash on Interstate 85. (Video above: WYFF News 4 Evening Headlines) On Wednesday, July 10 at 6:56 p.m., a semi-truck traveling north in the construction zone on I-85 at mile marker 96 near Gaffney, South Carolina, struck a railing on the right side of the road before crossing the concrete barrier that separates the northbound and southbound lanes, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said. According to officials, the semi-truck sideswiped another semi-truck traveling southbound and crashed head-on into a 2021 Nissan Rogue Sport. The driver of the SUV was trapped in his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said both semi-truck drivers were injured. Their conditions are currently unknown. The driver of the Nissan Rogue was identified as Donald Charles Harwood, 73, of Greenville. According to SCDOT traffic cameras, all lanes on I-85 were temporarily closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the vehicle fire in the southbound lanes near Exit 96. “While some sections of I-85 are in much better shape with the opening of the six-lane sections, others that are still under construction still pose a hazard to motorists traveling through Cherokee County. This is another victim of an unfortunate construction nightmare,” Fowler said. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
